Women’s Bible Study
The Moms’ Bible Study Group meets weekly for three hours, to worship, share about life and struggles, and study the Bible. Since its start in 2014, it has opened of the path for recovery to many women who are many victims of domestic violence, abuse and rape, and much healing can be witnessed.
We offer educational classes on a rotating basis, such as financial literacy, self-esteem, parenting, health and nutrition. NIA also hosts an ESL classes at the community center on Sunday mornings. We work with partners like AVANCE Houston and FIEL Houston to provide life skill classes and legal education for immigrants. The goal is to help the community become self-sufficient and empowered.
Once a year, Neighbors in Action hosts a women’s weekend retreat free of charge to any woman who is interested in growing in her relationship with God and unity with other ladies. We also organize half-day retreats on a regular basis.
Every month, a group of Port Houston women goes to a Houston nursing home to serve the residents through bingo games, worship, prayers, snacks, and fellowships. The ladies also host two annual taco and tamale sale fundraisers to benefit other children in need.
Arts and Crafts Classes
In April, NIA started a crafts class for women thanks to one of our wonderful volunteers! We meet every last Friday of the month. Everybody welcome!
In June, several Moms from our Port Houston community went to the Ahmadiyya Mosque in Houston to participate in an Iftar dinner and learn more about Islam, Ramadan, Pakistani culture, and how we can get together in unity and love each other in our cultural and religious differences.
The moms later graduated from our Old Testament Course offered by Reverend Sara Reyes. We had a wonderful ceremony and celebrated with other graduates from different organizations in Kingwood UMC. The moms will continue the course throughout August and read the New Testament. They will later go on and start their own groups to share their knowledge with other moms of the Port Houston Community.
Later in June the Port Houston moms enjoyed visiting an the elderly in a nursing home!
