Who We Are
VECINOS EN ACCIÓN

Neighbors in Action (Vecinos en Acción) is a faith-based nonprofit rooted in the Port Houston community of East Houston. What began as a small outreach ministry of First Methodist Houston has grown into a trusted community organization serving children, youth, and families for more than 30 years.
For three decades, we have walked alongside our neighbors through the slow, faithful work of accompaniment—building relationships, nurturing faith, and creating opportunities for people to grow. We believe every person is created in the image of God, has unique gifts to share, and deserves a place where they are known, loved, and belong.
Neighbors in Action isn't a place where help is simply handed out to "clients." It is a community shaped by genuine kinship and lasting relationships. We laugh together, pray together, celebrate together, and walk through difficult seasons together. We belong to one another, and it is through that shared life that God continues to transform our community.

Neighbors in Action was born out of a shared vision to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the Port Houston community. Founded in 1995 by members of First Methodist Houston following an international mission trip, our organization has spent more than 30 years walking alongside local families with a commitment to faith, relationships, and hope.
Today, Neighbors in Action serves as the community outreach ministry and supporting organization of First Methodist Houston. This close relationship allows us to combine the church's long-standing commitment to mission with a daily, neighborhood-based presence in Port Houston. Together, we walk alongside families through spiritual growth, education, and meeting basic needs.

The purchase of "Little NIA" marks an important new chapter for Neighbors in Action. This four-bedroom home is where Neighbors in Action first put down roots. We began renting this house in 2012, long before our main community center was built. It was a simple place, but it became the heart of our early ministry—where children learned to read, families gathered around the table, prayers were shared, and trusting relationships began to grow.
Today, Little NIA stands alongside our main community center as we prepare to transform it into a Learning and Community Support Center. The renovated space will expand opportunities for tutoring, adult education, ESL and citizenship classes, counseling, vocational training, and emergency assistance, allowing us to serve even more children, youth, and families.
